Best Deck Material
There isn't really a best deck material, considering the variety available to the average consumer, but there are some more preferred types of wood to use for the structure.
PWF
PWF or Pressure Treated lumber could be considered the "best deck material".
It is treated with a chemical preservative called Alkaline Copper Quateranary (ACQ) to resist rotting and is used for wood basements.
A PWF basement constructed properly should last indefinately.
So your deck will last longer if you use it, as opposed to regular spruce lumber which may only last 5 years (depending on conditions).
Remember you have to keep water away from any wood foundation, in order to have it last.
When there is a possibility of water gaining access, (to a cut end of a post for example) use tar as an extra precaution for water resistance.
If you use today's treated dimentional lumber, you also need to have ACQ approved fasteners.
The chemical treatment is corrosive to regular hot dipped and galvanized fasteners which will cause them to fail prematurely.
Talk to your supplier to make sure you use the right type!
But it's Green!
Don't think your finished when you install your last screw.
Your treated deck doesn't have to remain GREEN like the neighbor's.
Paint is still the best answer if you want to add personality to your wood deck!
But then again, that ensures yearly maintainence.
Cedar
Cedar can also be in the Best Deck Material catagory.
It has a natural beauty and is also resistant to rotting, but again, resistant!
Don't get caught in thinking any wood is water proof. You must take precautions to ensure there is no access for moisture to penetrate.
The warm look of cedar for some people, is the only way to go when building decks gazebo's and fences. A little clear water seal and your project is complete.
Again, yearly maintainence.
