Deck Designs

Attached Decks:

The first of the deck designs I would like to address, is the attached deck. It is the most common to us all. We all want to walk out of our home onto our deck and barbeque a steak now and again.

Unfortunately, most builders see this as an extra when we purchase a new home and we end up building it ourselves.

The attached deck is fixed to your house with a ledger board. The joists that make up the deck are attached with joist hangers mounted to the ledger.

Your deck design can incorporate any size, but it depends on your support system and the thickness of your joists.

Ground Level Decks

Ground level decks are just that. They are built on the ground. You can use a multitude of different materials to build a ground level deck, but it should always be constructed with treated lumber. Treated lumber will not rot as quickly.

My first ground level deck was constructed with 4x4 treated lumber and I used 2x6 treated as my deck floor. I then stained the floor with solid color stain.

I attached spindle railing around the perimeter to complete it.

The project was an easy to build, free standing, patio style deck that we enjoyed for years.

Tiered Decks

Tiered decks are a combination of attached decks, free standing and ground level decks.

They are usually the nicest looking because they have a lot of Character to them.

If you are to break it down, a tiered deck is basically, a deck or combination of decks, sitting on lower decks.

They can be composed of various shapes (octagons seem to work well) to add to their appeal. Tiered railings can then be applied to add even more Character.

With some nice landscaping and lighting around them, you can have a real show piece for your family barbeques.
