Safety
Safety here is paramount!
If it has to do with the springs, be very cautious. There is a lot of tension in them. You don't want to make mistakes here.
This, along with the weight of the door itself can seriously harm you if your fumbling around. Before attempting anything with these items KNOW what to expect!
If the door is down and the opener is unplugged, you are reasonably safe making simple repairs to your door, just stay away from the springs!
A Friend In Need?
I got a call on a Sunday afternoon from a friend needing help with his garage door that we had installed together, earlier in the month. " It's an emergency! The whole thing is hanging almost sideways in the opening. I don't know how it happened, it just came off. Can you help me with my garage door repair?"
Well, I thought it must be something I did and hurried over to assess the situation. When I got there I saw he was right. It was almost sideways in the opening and looking like a major catastrophy.
I looked closely at the door and it's parts and saw a cable on the right side had come off and not much else was wrong. We got a bench that looked just higher than where the door would be level and stood it next to the door. We lifted the door up and pushed the bench under one side.
I wound the cable around the cable drum and let the door down so the cable took the weight. Now we could lower the door to the safety of the floor. Once there we could check the cables and see if there was anything else wrong, which there wasn't.
I felt responsible for his turmoil, and was happy to help with this garage door repair, until his wife came out and asked "did you get a mark on your bumper when you closed the door on it?"
