We got a bench that looked just higher than where the door would be level and stood it next to the door. We lifted the door up and pushed the bench under one side. I wound the cable around the cable drum and let the door down so the cable took the weight. Now we could lower the door to the safety of the floor. Once there we could check the cables and see if there was anything else wrong, which there wasn't. I felt responsible for his turmoil, and was happy to help with this garage door repair, until his wife came out and asked "did you get a mark on your bumper when you closed the door on it?"
