Garage Door Maintainence

Here's a list for your garage door maintainence. Things to look for in order to keep your door working effeciently.

1) Push the door opener button and see if the door moves freely and is smooth in it's travel.

2) Check the reversing feature by placing a 2x4 on the floor, under the door and closing it. The door should reverse once it strikes the board. If not, adjust the up, and or downward force screws appropriately.

3) Do a visual inspection on the tracks, all the moving parts and the nuts and bolts associated with the door. Make sure they are not loose, there is no damage and there isn't any dirt build up on them.

4) Ensure the photo eyes are aligned properly.

5) Check the door's balance by disconnecting the release mechanism when the door is full closed and lifting the door 3-4 feet from the floor. It should stay in place there. If not the spring tension may need to be adjusted.

Note:

This is where it becomes dangerous. Consult your manufacturer's specifications for instructions and safety precautions if you must proceed yourself. Adjusting the springs can cause serious injury. Don't play around with them. This is one time it might be better to call your local garage door maintainence personel.

Good, or Bad Luck? You be the Judge

It was a Friday night and my father in law was working late finishing some woodwork in a house. Everybody had already left for the weekend and he just thrown the last load of tools into his van.

He went back to close the garage door and noticed someone had disconnected the release mechanism while doing some garage door maintainence. They had turned the power was off, so he figured he'd just close the door. The mechanism would engage and he'd be off for the weekend.

There wasn't a handle on the door so he placed his hands flat on the outside to get enough leverage to close it and pushed it down.

The door went too fast and slammed down on the concrete floor. Thats when he realized his fingers on one hand were squished between the fully closed door panels. You can imagine the shooting pain!

He tried to lift the door, but the release mechanism engaged when it closed. It was locked and there wasn't any power! Well, there wasn't anyone around. He was stuck!

It took 25 minutes before someone driving a street sweeper happened by. He was just finishing up before going home and happened to see him waving frantically with his one arm.

He rushed over to help, but had to get the keys, go through the house, into the garage and release the mechanism before he was free.

Aside from the excruciating pain he went through and the fact that his fingers took a while to heal, he says he was lucky that day. What if no one had come along?

Surprisingly, (even to him) he is no worse for wear today. Though he does remind us to be ready for anything.
