Patching Drywall

Patching drywall is very simple. Holes in the drywall are annoying and they make your house look like it's falling apart.

It's amayzing what a few drywall touch-ups can do for the look of your walls. With a fresh coat of paint over the touch-up, it will look new.

Tools Required

Drywall Paper or Mesh Tape

Finishing Joint Compound

Utility Knife

Drywall Knife

Trowel

Mud Pan

Medium/Fine Sanding Sponge

Primer

Paint

Patching Drywall - Small Holes

Assess the size of the hole first.

For small holes, a mesh drywall tape will work well. For bigger holes, you may need to cut the hole square and fix the hole with drywall and backing.

If the hole is dime size or smaller you can get away with mud only. No tape will be required.

The mesh tape patch is very easy to use. All you need to do is just peel off the backing and stick onto the hole to be fixed.

If your using paper tape you have to apply a reasonable amount of mud to the hole and rhe drywall surrounding the hole.

Apply your paper tape over the hole and use your patching drywall knife to apply pressure and set the paper tape into the mud. Start in the middle and work towards the ends respectively.

Make sure the papertape is set into the mud and apply a thin coat of mud over it. Smooth it out as much as possible. Feather the mud towards the outside beyond the patch and let it dry.

Finishing Up

When the mud is dry, sand with a sanding sponge. The sponges are alot easier to work with than regular sandpaper, as they fit nicely in your hand.

Don't remove too much mud or your repair will lack feathering and could show ridges when primed. Make sure the wall is smooth. If the wall has dimples or holes still on it, re-apply some mud, wait for it to dry, then sand again.

Once you are satisfied with your job, it's time to prime the wall. When you're finish priming, you can either spot paint the wall, or repaint the whole thing.

Depending on how many holes and knicks you had, you may want to do the entire wall. Paint doesn't always blend perfectly over a patch.
