Toilet Installation

Toilet installation is not as difficult as you might think. If you take your time and have all the tools and supplies on hand before you start, it's a breeze.

You can also have somebody on hand to help lift the toilet. They are kind of awkward and it will make it easier on you. But, you could do it yourself, if necessary.

Tools and Supplies Required

New Toilet

New Wax Ring

A Large Sponge

Pliers

Putty Knife

Adjustable Wrench

Large Blade Screwdriver

Before You Start

Toilet Installation:

Always check to see if you need to replace supporting parts such as water lines, or shut off valves. This could save you running back to the hardware store in the middle of your project.

Removing The Old Toilet

The first and most important step in toilet installation is to turn off the water supply either at the shut off valve that is hopefully attached at your tiolet, or the main shut off in your house if it's not.

You will want to flush the toilet to clear out the remaining water from the bowl, once the water is shut off. Any water left in the bowl or tank should be sopped up with your sponge. Disconnect the water supply line to the tank (long hose attached to shut off valve).

If you want to remove the toilet in two manageable pieces, loosen the bolts inside of the tank. Most tanks can be disconnected underneath with the plastic wing nuts. If not a large blade screwdriver should be sufficient inside the tank. Lift the tank off of the toilet bowl and set it on newspaper.

The bolts on the bottom of the toilet, under the plastic caps are next. Loosen the toilet bowl, rock it back and forth to break the seal, if necessary. Lift it up and place it on newspaper too.

You'll need to insert an old rag into the drain pipe to stop sewer gases from coming out and into the bathroom. Make sure it is large enough to keep from falling inside. Remove the old wax ring. Make sure the closet flange is well cleaned, so the new ring will seal properly.

Clean the floor where the old toilet was and your ready to install the new one.

Toilet Installation

If the tank is attached, lay the toilet on it's side and apply the new wax ring. Place the new toilet bowl upside down, if the tank is detached and put on a new wax ring. You can install a regular one, but I have found a double thick one ensures no leaks and is only pennies more.

Remove the old rags from the drain pipe and replace the old bolts with new ones. (Watch how they are positioned, so the new bolts can be placed the same). Place the toilet bowl over the hole and onto bolts applying downward pressure to seal the ring. The bowl must be placed straight down to fit properly. Install the plastic cap rings Replace the nuts turning gently but firmly. Do not over tighten or you might crack your new toilet. Put the plastic caps over the bolts and snap them into place onto the rings.

Install Toilet Tank

Toilet Installation:

If the float, flush handle and tank ball have not been installed yet, do this now.

Place the big washer on the threaded tank outlet. Position the tank right side up and align the bolts holes with the holes on the toilet bowl.

Place the rubber seals on the bolts and insert them. Install the plastic wing nuts underneath and tighten the bolts. Again, not too tight.

Next, connect the water supply line. You can now turn the water back on. Flush the toilet a few times, while checking for leaks.
